Wonderful pictures...made me feel warmth and filled with hope. Vignettes that through photography assumes a kind of enhanced value. Then again do they really...does it not depend on the observer and the observed. Of course! Today, being the observer, I felt uplifted by them. Especially the 'clapper' and the 'vichy' water!

When I started doing research into my maternal grandfather's family tree, I knew almost nothing. The two facts that I knew were that at one point in his life at the age of twenty-one he was a farm laborer's on Hollis Metcalfe Plantation in Metcalfe, Mississippi. This information was verified by his Draft Registration in 1917. My Mother did remember that he went into the Army when she was an infant or so she was told. The second fact was that he was born in Rehoboth, Wilcox, Alabama on December 14, 1896 according to his draft registration card. . After getting one hit on Ancestry. com, I first saw the name Gee's Bend for the first time in my life. This was in 2010 while my mother was still alive. This was more than she had discovered in her ninety years of life. So we then had his place of origin , his home when he was twenty-one and my mother remembered that his entire family moved to Chicago. ( She was the product of an unwed mother). I did find his death certificate and he died at the young age of twenty-eight years old. On the 1910 census, I did trace the family back to Gee's Bend, Alabama. My grandfather' s name was Robert Young. I have no idea why the Young 's name almost disappeared from the area by the 1920 census. I am planning to make the trip to find out more this fall. I am open to ideas on how to make the best use of my time in my search. I ran across this blog when I was doing one of my searches for more information. Would it be unrealistic to think the residents of Gee's Bend would be able to provide me with more history?

I was there 47 years ago as a seminary student hitchhiking my way around Europe and the labyrinth was covered
with chairs. In those days I didn't know what a labyrinth was, and how beautiful this one is. In all the changes Joyce
and I are going through these days, I appreciate very much the reminder of keeping the pilgrim self alive. Thank you

Chris, I'm so glad to see this wonderful piece up on the Red Egg blog. I often wonder why/how anyone (myself very much included) remains a Catholic these days. It's lessons like yours that remind me that WE are the church-- not the bishops (you have to wonder how they get their mitered heads so far up their asses) and certainly not that gang of bullies in Rome. Going through links on the "Make it Missoula" Facebook post, I found this story with the great pictures. I live in Granbury, Texas, and we are experiencing almost 2 months without rain, and the temperatures have been over 100 degrees for about the same amount of time. The drought here is serious business, so viewing these pictures of rain and mud made me believe that it won't always be like this. Just going on this trip with you through the pictures and comments gave me a "living through your eyes" experience. Thank you so much. For us ladies, I don't think there's anything much better than a "girls trip" doing those things we enjoy together. Ya'll all look like great ladies and great friends. Thanks, again. -Glenna-
